Why and How to use Surge Arresters

When electronic equipment is connected to long signal or power lines, antennas, etc., it is exposed to transients generated by induction, caused by lightning or EMP. A surge arrester protects the equipment from damage by "swallowing" the energy in the transient. See figure below. Surge arresters are self-recovering, handle repetitive transients and can be made failsafe.

Due to its characteristics as a switch, the surge arrester can be used in a variety of applications. One is as the switching device in power switching circuits, e g for ignition of automotive HID Xenon headlights. For such applications though, the requirements for long-term reliable switching performance necessitates a different design from that of a surge arrester. We are therefore offering a special product range for such applications; the SparctubeTM series.
